The Fox Creek Varsity Boys Basketball team has been through its share of ups and downs during the 2019-2020 season. However, the team finds themselves in position to finish as a 2 seed in Region 2-AA going into a matchup with the Saluda Tigers on Friday night. The Predators answered the bell from the tip-off by jumping out to a 7-0 lead at the beginning of the game and cruising to a 69-44 victory.
The Preds utilized their matchup zone defense throughout the game (which has been a staple of Coach Peckham’s teams throughout the years) to frustrate the Tigers into a 9 for 56 shooting night from the field. Last year’s Region Player of the Year, Dallan Wright, (who recently signed with Virginia Tech on a football scholarship) was only 3 for 11 shooting for the game and the Predator defense forced 27 Saluda turnovers on the night. FC used great ball movement on offense and outstanding transition offense in order to maintain a 12 point lead at halftime. The lead was extended in the 3rd quarter as the Preds opened up on 17-4 run to lead 47-27 going into the 4th quarter. Saluda went to their full court defense to try to get back into the game, but it wasn’t enough as the Preds were able to score 22 pts in the 4th to secure a 25 point win over the preseason pick to win Region 2-AA.
FC was led offensively by Deavion Scales with 20 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. DeMarkus Young had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Chandler O’Bannon tallied 11 points and 9 rebounds. Justin Freeman (7 pts), Jacoby Johnson (6 pts), Jadon Johnson (5 pts), Jordan Carroll (5 pts), and Trey Butler (2 pts) rounded out the scoring.
Both the Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys teams will now have the opportunity to clinch a home state playoff game if they can defeat Batesburg-Leesville HS on Tuesday for Senior Night! Coach Jacobs and Coach Peckham are asking for as many Fox Creek students, parents, alumni, and fans to be in attendance to honor our 5 Senior boys/2 Senior girls as well as to cheer the Predators onto victory!
